Last night, we were waiting for Daddy to get home from work and trying to find something to do for a few minutes. Dinner was ready, the table was set, Daddy was on his way home, and the kids were starting to pick at each other. So we grabbed our napkins and found the chip clips...and VOILA! Capes were made. I clipped them around their little necks and told them to run run run! It was way too cute, and it sure helped to pass those "before-dinnner-can-be-the-witching-hour" moments.
When Max and I gave the kids chalk, I don't think we realized how much of a graffiti art it would become on our back porch. They LOVE playing with chalks and drawing "elephants" and "narwhals" and "horses" on the ground...and the door window...and the table...and the trike...and pretty much anywhere. Which isn't a huge deal, because it's outside and all we have to do is go out there with the hose, and it's gone in five minutes.
The chalk graffiti makes me smile. To see the mix of elephants that the kids beg Daddy to draw, and the scribbles that they create. It's priceless. And precious.
And so, we hang out on the porch. A lot. With our chalks. And our car. And our bike. And we make pictures. And get messy. And sweaty. And that's ok. It's good for us all. Even the wee babe #3, who likes to take up the majority of the room on my lap.
My sweet little boy, who is continually making me laugh. What a ham.
Little feet, covered in chalk...
...that gets traipsed into the house. There are usually chalk-feet trails all over my floors. And as much as I can be a crazy (at least, according to my dear husband!) about keeping my floors clean, these little trails make me smile, and I usually don't rush to clean them up. Truly, they are such precious reminders of our babes, and the little moments we are learning to treasure and hold dear to our hearts. It won't be long before the chalk will fade and these moments will be long gone. It's so easy to forget, and yet, the time will so easily fly right by. For now, I'll keep and hold tight to the chalk graffiti and these little chalky trails on my floor.
Maybe this is me nesting, but I have been trying to make sure things are ready for when Baby #3 arrives. I've been washing itty-bitty baby clothes and blankets, cleaning out the infant carseat, pulling out the swing and pack-n-play, picking up teeny dipes, making a calling list, and prepping Max for doing the majority of the meals and kid care when he is on paternity leave.
I feel like everything is mostly in order, and if the baby came out today, we would be well-prepared (although still maybe discussing a name, ha!), which makes me feel ready and eager. The only thing I am having a bit of a challenge with is coming up with easy meal ideas.
I have some basic things that will be ready: a couple freezer meals I've put together, as well as having basic ingredients to make sandwiches, cheese crisps, pasta & sauce, etc. Max knows how to make food for the kids, even if he tries to tell me they will only eat pizza the entire time. He is plenty capable and is good in the kitchen.
But I still want to make up/have ready a few more meal ideas that are easy to take out and heat up or throw in the crockpot for the day, so that the first few days/weeks are made just a little bit easier, and so we can stay relatively healthy!
So, I come to you, my dear friends and family - what are some easy, healthy meals that can be frozen or made ahead or that I can have the supplies on hand to be made quickly? Any good ideas that you personally have used or heard of? I would love any suggestions...

36 weeks pregnant today, with our little baby #3. Getting closer and more anxious to meet this little one. The days have started to feel LONG, and I think it's mostly because I am just eager for our babe to make an appearance. I'm sure Baby #3 will be much like our other two, and make us wait to make a debut. Ah well, I guess it's another lesson in patience and trusting in God's timing!
I am feeling good, albeit more and more tired. I have gained, so far, between 20-25 pounds, which the Doc says is perfect. I haven't had a Doc appt in a few weeks, and am eager to see if I am dilated at all. The Braxton-Hicks have been getting stronger and more frequent. Once I get in bed (and can manage to stay in bed without having to pee every 5 minutes...), I have no trouble sleeping. The only other thing that plagues me is heartburn, which I can control mostly with portion sizes and what/when I eat.
I have been craving cheesecake and chocolate like crazy. Mmmm...cheesecake with a brownie bottom and caramel sauce?! Bring it on, haha! The kids are getting excited - anytime I talk about doing something for the baby, L asks if it's time for me to pop the baby out yet. It's cute. And Ezzy will look at me and the baby, and say "Pop!", like he wants me to shoot it out right then and there. I'm sure the kids will have some different opinions once the baby arrives and they realize how different things will be for them, but it makes me happy at how eager they are for this little one.
I thought, for a little fun, we could do some comparing. I pulled out some photos from my previous pregnancies. The first one below is from when I was pregnant with Eliana, between 35-36 weeks, when Max came home for a weekend the beginning of September 2009. I posted a few other photos of my "33-week L belly" a few years ago, you can find them HERE.
The photo below was taken 2 years ago, when I was about 36 weeks pregnant with Ezra, the end of September 2010. I also had some lovely photos taken by Keely Joy Photography, when I got L's 1-year old photos done. I posted about them HERE
So, what do you think? Any similarities between the belly pictures? Does that change your opinion on whether it is a girl or a boy? Is my belly bigger this time around? Because some days I feel like I have a super huge watermelon chilling down there! Oh the fun of being pregnant and getting ready to meet this little babe - only a few more weeks to go and s/he will be here - WOOT!
I told you I like to change things around...whether it be my living room (or bedroom, if I could get my dear husband to think that's a good idea...) or my hair or the blog...and this time, it was the blog.
I just get so excited to putz around on PSE and play around with fonts and colors and HTML. I know it may not be much, but it's fun to me, and I had fun messing around. I wanted something simple and easy and pretty. So there you have it.
And now, a certain little blonde-headed toddler of a boy is pulling at my leg, asking me to come sit outside while he draws "elephants" on the porch. Off I go...

Our weekend, much like our last week, was fairly low-key. I think that's just how it's going to be around here for awhile now, and I am totally ok with that! Friday night, after the babes were in bed, Max and I hunkered down on the couch for some Lost and the first episode of Downton Abbey...which is my latest obsession, not gonna lie...
Saturday morning, Max woke up at 0530 (his usual weekday wake-up time) to go fishing/shrimping - I didn't even have to tell him to get out of bed when his alarm went off, so I knew he was pretty excited to go out. He came home a few hours later with adventurous stories. I think this early morning fishing thing might be happening more often on Saturday mornings! We had a chill day and then some friends came over to put the babes to bed, so that Max and I could have a date night. We got out the door a bit later than we wanted, so our planned time on the beach was cut short, but it was still nice to get out. We came home, and may or may not have hunkered back down on the couch for more Downton Abbey (ok, to be fair, only I am watching it...Max sits on the couch with me and reads a book...but really, I guess that's just as nerdy, so whatevs!).
Sunday was church in the morning, and then I crashed with the kids after lunch. I mean, the kids and I slept for almost 3 hours in the afternoon! I woke up feeling much more rested, but not so great physically - I think I am fighting some little bug off, and that's why I've been so exhausted and feeling so down lately. I pretty much woke up, made dinner, got the kids in bed, made Max a lunch, and fell back asleep for the night. My energy was nonexistent. I definitely woke up feeling a little better this morning, so hopefully that was that. Ah well.
Not sure why I just felt the need to ramble about every little detail of our weekend, but oh well. There you have it. On Friday, the kids were helping me fold the clean laundry, and they decided that it was imperative to wear some of Daddy's white shirts. They ran around and around in them for a few hours. It was way too cute!
I think this is what the majority of our Saturday morning looked like, once Daddy got home from his adventures - the babes pulled most of their toys out, made Daddy lay down, covered him with blankets, and then sprawled on him/with him/by him. They had a blast.
So, that was our weekend.
How was yours?
You may or may not be happy to know that this is the last of our Arizona vacation photos. I shared most of our big adventures, and then realized I still had a few randoms that were taken. So, without further ado, the end of our AZ vacation photos and stories...
One evening, after dinner, we took a drive through the mountains - through fields (is that what you call them?!) of cactus, bathed in dusky, golden sunlight. It was gorgeous, a very different view than we are used to here in the lush, coastal forests of NC! Plus, it was just plain fun driving up and in and over the mountains (even if Mama D had to prepare herself!)!
One of the many evening bubble baths that L & Z enjoyed in Bibi and Babu's big tub.
One of the main reasons we made the trek to AZ was an Up with People Reunion - I traveled in UWP a little over 5 years ago, and it was time for us to come back and have a little reunion. Which happened to be in Tucson. Which happens to be where my parents recently moved back to. So we made the whole thing into a 2-week family vacation. The reunion was towards the tail-end of our time in AZ and wouldn't you know, I didn't take one photo of those three days?! Seriously! Me! The one who is constantly snapping. I guess I just got caught up in catching up with friends, and sharing stories, tears, laughter and many hugs. It was fantastic seeing the people I traveled with, and with whom I shared such an incredible experience. Those three days were full and included many late nights for this mama - and left me eagerly anticipating our 10-year reunion!
Not only did I travel in UWP, but my parents also traveled (and actually met through UWP!) way back in the day - as well as an uncle and aunt, and then my brother a few years ago. I guess it's been a family thing, ha! My Uncle Lee came into town for his 30th UWP Reunion, and it was great seeing him.
The kids did fairly well with the 3-hour time difference, but we had a bit of a rough time in the afternoons - somedays, naps just weren't happening...which made for crabby babes.
Snuggling with Daddy, watching a show, trying to rest for a bit.
L & Z with their Bibi and Babu.
Overall, we had such a great vacation to AZ. We loved spending time with Bibi & Babu, experiencing desert sights and sounds, and getting away from home for a few weeks to relax.
This week has been pretty laid back around here. I don't know if we just didn't have much planned, or if I have been more tired than usual (or just avoiding the outside heat...), but we've spent a lot of time inside, playing and hanging out. Our time hasn't seemed to drag on and on, so I figure we are keeping plenty busy, in spite of not going many places.
We have made a lot of tents, colored messy toddler pictures, played with play-doh, read a ton of books, and spent time on the porch riding our bike and car. It's been a low-key week, but a good one.
I bounce between having zero energy and taking naps when the kids do, to having a lot of motivation and desire to work on projects. It's this back-and-forth between feeling exhausted and wanting to "nest" like crazy. Earlier this week, we rearranged our living room - it was a simple furniture switch - the chair with the play kitchen (if you want to see what it USED to look like, check it here), but I like it. I love moving things around, and making small changes - with furniture, my hair, the blog - I just like change in small amounts! It's fun and makes life interesting!
For whatever reason, I felt the need for more color in our space, so cut up some fabric scraps and made a few garlands to hang up - one above the play kitchen and another above the sink. I also took a frame I had, wrapped it in extra fabric and called it a new door wreath. I think it needs a little something else (a letter hanging in the middle or some flowers glued on the side or SOMEthing...), but for now it is good.
Once we moved the chair, I felt like we needed some artwork above it. I stapled some fabric over a canvas I had, hung up the photo of L, and a random red frame I had laying around. I intend to eventually hang little photos in the red frame, but until I get around to printing some small, updated photos, the scrap fabric garland will have to do.
Our week may not have been crazy, but it's been good. And in spite of not feeling like we have done a lot, I have gotten a lot on my list done - gotta keep at it, checking little things off here and there, before our little baby #3 decides to make it's grand entrance :)
35 weeks pregnant with Baby #3! Feeling pretty well, although definitely starting to get more uncomfortable, especially at night. My heartburn has been pretty bad lately, but I am trying to control it with portion sizes and what I am eating - and when that fails, I love me some zantac! I have been tired (ha ha, of course!) lately, and have started taking naps in the afternoon - which help a LOT - why I didn't do it sooner, I'll never know!
I developed this weird, super-itchy rash last week and went in to get it checked - nothing abnormal and the Doc decided they had no idea what it was, so prescribed some basic antihistamine, which has helped a lot. While I was there getting checked, the baby was being monitored, and was described as a maniac because of how active s/he was - don't know if that was a good or a bad thing, ha ha - our little maniac, oh gosh!
Max and I thought it would be fun to create a little game where family and friends could take a guess when Baby #3 will make an appearance and what his/her stats would be. You can click on the link below and it will take you to the website where you can enter a guess:

A little reminder about the births of L & Z...
Eliana was due October 7 and was born (after a 24+ hour labor) on October 18.
She was born at 5:43am, weighing 8lbs, 12oz and measuring 21 inches.
Ezra was due October 26 and was born (my 4-hour labor was induced) on November 3.
He was born at 12:15pm, weighing 10lbs, 2oz and measuring 21 inches.
Have fun guessing!
One of the last big adventures we took in AZ, was a trip to The Living Desert Museum, and it was awesome! We got to walk through the desert, seeing different animals on exhibit, while soaking in the sun (and heat!) and learning a little more about what makes up the desert.
A lot of the big animals were already hiding away from the sun by the time we strolled through, but we did catch a glimpse of a bear, a porcupine, a beaver, big-horn sheep, Mexican wolves, a gila monster, turtles, snakes, lizards, prairie dogs, and hummingbirds, among others.
Because we were in the desert, there were also some wild creatures that visited us. I turned around at one exhibit, to find this iguana staring at me. I have to admit, I was a bit startled by him being RIGHT next to me, and may have done a little excited dance - it was a little hilarious. He hung out for a few minutes, then strutted his stuff, and was on his way. It was pretty neat!
I think the turtles were Ezzy's favorite. He is still talking about how "fun" they were. And L loved the snakes...funny girl!
I was having way too much fun taking photos - Max was waiting around for me time after time, ha! I loved all the colors and textures and things we don't have here at home.
Although we were hot and tired by the end of our morning at the Desert Museum, it was well worth it! We had a great time seeing animals and plants of the desert!
Two weeks ago, while on our vacation to AZ, we took a drive from Tucson into the mountains, up Mt. Lemmon. It took us about an hour and a half to get to the top, and it was an absolutely gorgeous drive. Apparently, we drove through multiple climatological zones - going from the saguaro-covered desert, to the pine-covered mountaintop. It was lovely - plus, it was almost 30º cooler at the top, than it had been at the bottom - which this pregnant mama was happy about!
Ezzy fell asleep on the way up, so he missed out when we got out at the top (or at least, the top most that WE drove to that day!). A fire came through recently, so many of the trees were without leaves/needles. The sun and colors and smells and cooler air were wonderful. I really, really enjoyed it - is it obvious yet?!
It seriously didn't feel like were in AZ anymore! SO crazy!
Pretty sure this is one of my favorite photos from the trip. I just love it!
We stopped for a picnic lunch (and for L to have her first port-a-potty experience, ha!), to stretch our legs, to pick up some pinecones and sticks, and to blow bubbles (which, it looks like, Max enjoyed the most, bwa ha ha!).
After eating lunch and enjoying the views, we started our trek back down the mountain. We made sure to stop at one of the Vista points, for some photos and to breathe in the air, before getting all the way back down.
The view was gorgeous. And then I got the genius idea for Max to take some photos of me...and he got the genius idea for me to lay down on the rocks...pretty sure that is one of the most awkward (or at least uncomfortable!) pregnancy photos ever...
We loved our drive up Mt. Lemmon - it was a nice break from the heat, and it was really neatl to see the difference from the bottom of the mountain, to the top.
It has been a busy week. With friends visiting from out of town and BBQ's and Doc visits and catching up on household chores and spending time with my precious babes, I have not had much time for blogging. I still have a few more posts of AZ photos (I know, I know...you probably thought I was done, ha!), as well as a handful of other things to share in the next few days.
But for now, know we are doing well. I will be 35 weeks pregnant, and beginning to feel rather uncomfortable. It's probably the endless running after toddlers during the day, or the working out in the early hours of the morning, or the not-enough sleep...but this mama is always a super exhausted woman at the end of the day.
It's been nice to get back into a routine, now that we are back and fully settled from our AZ vacation, and now that Max is finally back at work full-time (he was out a long time due to the infection/hospital stay/etc a few months ago) and able to run/workout again. Although getting used to waking up at 0530 again has been kicking my behind! Ah well - it just makes for earlier bedtimes, right?!
The kids are doing great. Ezzy is talking more and more. I feel like every day, he says new words. It makes me smile. Eliana is doing fantastic with her potty-training and has been making significant progress. I can't say she is fully potty-trained, but we are close. And that is good news!
Ok, my time is up. I have a little skype date (thank you, Jesus, for Skype!), and then it's off to find sleep for this tired mama....

It has taken me a few days to get this done, because the weekend went way too fast, and before I realized, it was already the 12 of August, and I just barely remembered that I have goals this year. Ha! I guess that gives you a good idea of how they have been going this month. I'll be honest: going on vacation did not help with much goal progress in the past few weeks. It gave us a chance to relax and leave behind our usual routine, which was just lovely - but I also left everything at home, meaning I didn't work on anything while in AZ. Which was good, and needed. But just equals not much progress this month on goals. Ah well. The year is not over yet!
1. Community Living: No definite progress here, but in September there are a few Bible studies starting up, and I am eager to join one or two.
2. Physical Activity: Still trying to work out a few times a week. Last week I did great until the weekend and then it went out the window. This week, I've made it my goal to work out 5 of the 7 days. We'll see how I do. My bigger challenge lately has been my eating, and more, WHAT I am eating. I just want cake and cookies and chocolate and ice cream. All very delicious things, but not in the amount I've been consuming them. I need to cut back - I don't want an 11-pound baby emerging from my body in a few weeks!
3. Read 15 books: I have not touched any books (except the Bible) in the past month. I had the best intentions to read on vacation, but I did not. It was more fun relaxing and talking, than it was to read. So nothing new here. I have a whole pile of books to read though, and more on my list, of course! I have been reading along with #SheReadsTruth and am in Proverbs - seriously, good stuff, y'all. God is tugging on my heart - and I am being challenged. I need so much grace. Always.
4. Manual photography skills: Still working on it, still nothing big here. Would still like to find some more online tutorials and learn more of the technical side of what I have been doing with my settings - I can make the camera do what I want it do, and mostly understand what is going on, but I want to add some more knowledge to it.
5. Outside walks/playtime: The kids literally beg me to play on the porch multiple times a day, so we do. They LOVE it. And I love that they love it. They have to learn to share their car and bike (which often involves many tears and mama intervening a LOT, ha!), and they get to play with chalk (that sometimes finds it's way inside the house, like yesterday, when I found blue chalk all over my wall!), and interact with nature (there was a lizard on the screen yesterday that we were all very enthralled by...). The whole walks thing has not been happening. I just can't do it during the day anymore. Give it a few more weeks, when it's not quite as hot, and we'll get back to it.
6. Creative and structured toddler activities: We've been working on ABC's through a fun book we bought. I would like to find some more material to practice numbers and colors too. And maybe create some time into our usual routine that we all sit down and work on them for a few minutes, a couple of times a week. I think the kids would think it was fun.
7. Journal consistently: Going a little better. Not great, but I've made an effort this last month.
8. Date night 1x/month: We got to go on THREE dates while in AZ! It was such a blessing! I am hoping for another this month, especially with baby #3 coming soon - only question...what to do that would be fun and cheap and creative?!
9. Grow a garden: Well, my plants and flowers took a beating while on vacation, but I think they are coming back. My garden is growing...and so are the weeds. I REALLY need to get out there and pull weeds - maybe the kids should help me...or maybe that will equal half the garden getting ripped out too?!?!
10. 10 min/day of "Be still and know" time: The last week, I have been making this time a priority each morning, and I am loving it. It is so good for my heart.
11. Craft time: Yesterday, I got this incredible desire to make things. So, some pillows and a new front-door wreath, and some garlands, and a new wall hanging were made. All in a naptime. Yeah, since when do I get that much sewing/crafting done?! It was nice to have some inspiration and motivation to work on things - and it's fun to have a few new things around. I still have a few more pillows to sew up to add to the couches, and a few other little house/baby projects - and a lot of desire to work on them!
12. Baby #3: Doing well. Growing well. Moving a LOT. The Doc called him/her a 'maniac' baby the other day. Dunno if I want to take that as a compliment? I guess I have a VERY active baby, ha! Getting so, SO excited to meet our little one, and become a family of FIVE!
Ok, so now that I have gone through these, I realize I have made SOME progress - more than I thought! Although I definitely still have some progress to make - some things to work on, which is good! I like having direction and goals to work on - it's good for me!
The view from a family friend's pool was just gorgeous! We spent a morning there and wore the kids out, floating and splashing around in the water. Ezzy is a bit more hesitant about getting in and swimming, but L is a little fish...I think she could've spent the whole day in that pool!
A few evenings, while in AZ, the kids would go outside, rip off all their clothes, and play away in the kiddie pool on the patio. It was a great end to many of our days. I think they spent more time dumping water into various buckets/trucks/cups than actually "swimming" - but they had a blast!
Bibi took us to the Tucson Children's Museum one morning. It was a great size and had great activities for L and Z. They enjoyed seeing emergency vehicles, a submarine, science experiments, and playing with trains, sandboxes, a "grocery store", and banging on instruments.
One day, we packed sandwiches and met Babu at his office for lunch. It was fun seeing where he works and meeting some of his staff - plus, the kids got a kick out of playing with Babu during the workday!
We play a lot outside, so it was only natural that we played a lot outside while in AZ. Auntie Alison was able to spend a few days with us, which was fantastic. So happy to see her in person, to catch up with her, and to spend some time blowing bubbles together...
We also had a few afternoons that we trekked to a few playgrounds/parks. The kids LOVE going to the park, so it was just perfect - spending time outside (although one day it was HOT, so it was a short-lived trip, ha!), wearing the babes out, and getting to play on the slides and swings - so fun!
Babu, and his grand babes. I love L's cheesy grin!
This smile! She was having so much fun on this windy tube slide!
The view from one of the parks.
And, a random picture from our trip. The kids found these glasses at my parents house - I think they were once made/worn by my brother for a Halloween costume - and it was seriously so funny to see the kids walking around wearing them! I giggled every time!
